BPSCA Competitions & Trials

Service Dog of the Year

The first Service Dog of the Year competition was held in London in October 1991 and has since been run at Stoneleigh, Melton Mowbray and HM Prison Services College at Newbold Revel. In 2015 it was hosted at Tally Ho, Edgbaston with competitors invited to attend from Home Office Police Forces, Police Scotland, Prison Service Northern Ireland, HM Armed Forces, HM Prisons, UK Border Force, and the BPSCA.

The competition is open to representatives from all the agencies and Services who use dogs and to individual BPSCA members who will be competing in their own right. Handlers and dogs entering the Service Dog of the year Competition must both be part of a currently serving dog team.

The principles and the concept behind these trials is to give both serving dog handlers and retired service dog handlers of the BPSCA the opportunity to take part against each other and against the Associate Members on an equal footing and to compete in friendly rivalry against their fellow members and members of other outside uniformed Services and Arms.

Working Dog of the Year

The Working Dog of the Year evolved from the Service Dog of the Year as a result of retired handlers entering the trial with their personal dogs.  Retired handlers were entering the competition as early as 1991 and in 2001 it was decided that civilian Associate Members who handled dogs professionally could enter to compete with their working dogs. These dogs had to be of a high standard and able to work the same tests as their police, prison, and military counterparts.

In 2005, Heath Working Dogs presented the BPSCA with the ‘Mick Smith Trophy’ which was awarded to the civilian dog team that gained the most points at the trial.  In 2007, the competition was formally split into two parts,  The Service Dog of the Year and The Working Dog of the Year, with trophies and championship coats awarded respectively.

The Victor Ludorem is now awarded to the dog team, from either competition, that attains the most points overall.
